Planting Day!

Returning intern Jennifer Weber, American Indian OIC High School student, Ashleigh Shohn, and American Indian OIC High School science and math teacher, John Holmlund, joined us for our 7th annual planting of the gardens. The plants got an early start in the greenhouse this year, so they are well on their way to producing what we hope is another bumper crop.

This year we have several varieties of corn and beans from the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara people who currently live on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota. The Arikara Striped Bean came with beans attached from the greenhouse, so we will be germinating more beans directly in the ground in the Three Sisters Garden.  Last week we planted a Mandan shield bean and a Pottawatomi lima bean. Almost all have germinated already.

Come to the Big Back Yard to see how they grow!
